Munchkin is a card game that has seen many expansions in recent years. These expansions have added new cards, new rules, and new ways to play the game. With so many options available it can be difficult to figure out which one will best suit your needs. That’s why I’ve compiled this list of the 5 best munchkin expansions for you!
Base Game: What is Munchkin?
Game Features
Munchkin is a card-based board game in which all players work cooperatively to win the game before any other player does. With over 12 million units sold since its release, it has become one of Steve Jackson‘s most successful games (he also created such notable titles as Illuminati and Car Wars).
The goal of each turn begins by drawing one random card from the deck – representing what kind of monster or obstacle that player must face. If they are successful at defeating it then they earn gold value for treasure plus bonuses depending on their class etc., but if not, then an injury occurs resulting in loss of turn (and often levels).
Mechanics
Munchkin is a card game with simple rules but complex strategies. Players begin the game by choosing their character (from over 20 options) and then taking that class’ cards into hand – representing all of the unique abilities, items, weapons, etc., associated with it.
However, each time they do so they must face any resulting effects which may include losing levels/treasures gained, etc., at random intervals throughout play.
The objective of Munchkin is threefold: defeat every monster in sight; reach Level Ten before everyone else; amass a specified amount of treasure (or more than what other players have). If this is achieved, then you win. Otherwise – if one or more players are defeated before everyone else does – then the game ends and they lose.
Scoring System
Munchkin uses a unique scoring system where players are ranked by who has the most/least of something, rather than how many points they have. Players can lose levels for being too weak or gain them for defeating monsters – but only if other players aren’t already at that level beforehand. The first player to achieve Level Ten wins while everyone else loses!
Each Class card also features an Achievement list which is completed when specific criteria are met during gameplay (i.e., leveling up with each class once). Rewarding minor bonuses, these help pushes play along and provide meaningful goals to work towards as you go through your Munchkin campaign(s) together!

1. Munchkin 3 – Clerical Errors – Best Munchkin Expansion
Overview
If you’re new to Munchkin, then this is my top pick for an expansion pack – it’s easy enough that anyone can learn the rules and play together. However, it still offers a good challenge to veterans of the game who are looking for something different while not scaring off newcomers with difficult-to-understand mechanics or excessive depth/variation in gameplay.
This is only my pick because I am reviewing all five expansions at once – but there’s no doubt that this will be among the most popular Munchkin expansions of 2017 due to its affordable price point and ease of use for all experience levels.
Mechanics
Clerical Errors plays like a standard Munchkin deck with players required to beat quests in order to level up and win the game. However, every time you take on a quest (or any other action) there’s always a chance that something will go wrong – forcing you into combat against The Naughty Nun! This is an easy way for beginners to get familiarized with key concepts involved in playing Munchkin while veterans can still enjoy themselves thanks to new cards being introduced from expansion sets.
In addition, this pack includes some of the best weapons/equipment available today such as Holy Water which allows players who lose battles when “Drunk” or “Liquored Up” to kill their enemies instead of losing strength points. This is a great way to level up quickly and reduce the time it takes for players to win.
Components
This is definitely the best value expansion pack available today. Not only are you getting over 100 cards included with six class tokens, three bookmark markers, and an exclusive level counter featuring Fowl Play – but it also includes a lot of gameplay variations to keep things interesting for veterans who have been playing Munchkin since day one!
This makes Clerical Errors the best choice if you’re looking for your first or second expansion because it’s cheaper than other Munchkin packs while still offering great depth in terms of replayability thanks to new Achievements being added every time you play.
Pros And Cons
Final Judgement
This is a great pack if you’re looking for your first expansion and it comes with a lot of value considering the number of cards included in this set – which totals over 100! Not only that but there are also six class tokens, three bookmark markers, and an exclusive level counter featuring Fowl Play!
In addition, this expansion pack has a lot of replayability due to the new Achievements that are introduced every single time you play. This is definitely one of my personal favorites and it’s filled with great cards from other expansions such as Nun-Chucks which allows players who have been Cursed or Transformed into another class to attack.
2. Munchkin 4 – Need for Steed – Best for Veteran Players
Overview
The fourth pack in the Munchkin series, Need for Steed is a must-have if you’re looking to add some depth into your gameplay without being too complicated. What makes this expansion stand out from the rest is how it allows players to move through rooms that contain Steeds instead of always fighting monsters or running away – making for a much faster and more strategic gameplay experience!
This makes cards like Enchanted Sleeping Horse even stronger since it now has two hands available whenever needed while still offering great bonuses due to its other effects!
Mechanics
The gameplay mechanics are pretty simple to learn and it’s much easier to play compared to other Munchkin packs. For instance, one of the new room cards is Stables which allows players who have a Horse in their hands to automatically Run Away from monsters instead of always fighting them! This makes things less complicated if you don’t want your game night being focused on intense battles with every monster encounter – making this pack perfect for veteran players who are looking for something quick that still offers good depth.
Components
This expansion includes some great new components like 100 cards (120 if you include the three-level counters), six class tokens, and several bookmarks to make things more fun. There are also two brand new Races included in this set which is very unique compared to other Munchkin sets – these races are Satyrs and Centaurs!
Pros And Cons
Final Judgement
Munchkin is one of the most popular card games out in the market right now and Need for Steed makes it even better by offering a ton of new cards to keep gameplay interesting. This expansion is perfect for veteran players who are looking for something quick that still offers good depth while being suitable for all levels of experience – I definitely recommend this if you’re looking to add some more excitement into your Munchkin game nights!
3. Munchkin Zombies – Best for Players Who Want to Be Scared Out of Their Wits
Overview
Munchkin Zombies is the perfect expansion for players who want to add more excitement to their gameplay sessions. This pack not only offers a ton of new cards but also has plenty of expansions included so you can enjoy hours upon hours of fun!
This pack is full of Zombies, Werewolves and other creatures that are usually associated with horror games – if you’re not a fan of gore then this might not be the best expansion to get!
Mechanics
This expansion features some unique mechanics that are not seen in other Munchkin sets. These include ‘Loan Sharking’ which lets players borrow items (for a price) and return them when the game is over, Feral Cats that give extra bonuses to any Cat item cards played during gameplay, and even encounters with real Zombies!
Components
This expansion includes two decks of cards (including over 150 zombies) and six class tokens to help you keep track. It also has several bookmarks included so that gameplay runs smoothly for all players involved!
The art style featured in this set is a bit different from other Munchkin sets which might be a turn-off if you’re looking for something that’s more on the comical side. However, if you’re a fan of horror movies then this set is definitely worth checking out!
Pros And Cons
Final Judgement
This is definitely a fun pack that’s perfect for veteran players who are looking to add depth to their Munchkin sessions. If you’re not a fan of horror or gore then this might not be the best set out there, but if it sounds like your kind of thing then I highly recommend checking it out today!

Before we get started, one thing that I should mention about this pack is that it can be a bit complicated for players who are new to Munchkin games – if you’re looking for something simple then this might not be the best set out there. That being said if you love RPG elements and fantasy themes then this expansion is perfect for you!

This pack adds several new mechanics including Cursed Hands, Steeds, and even Monster Enhancers which can make each game of Munchkin more complex than ever before!
Another thing worth mentioning about this expansion is that it’s perfect for players who enjoy playing with multiple players. The more people that are involved in the game, the more fun it will be (and this is one of those expansions that works perfectly for parties or family gatherings).

The art style in this set is fantastic and really helps to add a bit of depth to the gameplay experience. The fantasy theme can be pretty hit or miss depending on your preferences, but if you’re looking for something that’s different then I highly recommend checking it out!
Pros And Cons
Final Judgement
If you’re looking for an exciting pack with fantasy-themed goodies then I highly recommend checking out DeRanged today – but if this doesn’t sound like your kind of thing then I’d recommend checking out another pack such as Munchkin Booty instead.

Today I’m going to be taking a look at Munchkin Half Horse, Will Travel which offers new cards and mechanics with each pack so your gameplay experience never gets stale.

That being said if you enjoy playing with variety in your games then this might be the perfect pick for you!
Mechanics
This pack introduces a whole new mechanic known as Race. The way this works is that players will have to choose which race they want before gameplay starts and then each player has to try and win by playing cards from their preferred races (or using special abilities). Another thing worth mentioning about this pack is that it has a lot of cards which can be used as items or equipment. This makes gameplay more interesting and exciting because you never know when one of these cards will end up saving your life!
Components
In terms of components, this pack comes with 200 unique cards so there’s plenty to go around during each game session. The art style isn’t for everyone since it’s a bit cartoony and silly, but if you’re looking for something that can make your games more comical then this might be the right pick for you!

Final Judgement
Half Horse, Will Travel is a great expansion that offers players more variety in their gameplay. With plenty of cards and mechanics to mess around with, each game session will be more exciting than ever before!
